Surfing

Noted around the world as the “Gold Coast” of California, the coastline from Ventura to Carpinteria boasts multiple renowned surf breaks, including the famous Rincon Point. Given our close proximity to barreling beach breaks, some of the longest point breaks in the world, and easy access to beginner waves, students have the chance to surf waves of all different types.  Whether a student is focused on cross-stepping a longboard, maximizing their “tube time” or landing their next aerial rotation, our expert coaches help prepare the necessary skills for their search of the perfect wave.

The goal in our Surfing program is to have our students riding waves and to provide them with a holistic education of what it means to be a surfer. The course is built around four surfing principles to lay the groundwork for a lifetime full of waves:

  • Culture
  • Etiquette
  • Fitness
  • Style

Even though we offer surfing in the fall and spring, we do not surf every day. The ocean is a variable environment, and many days are not suitable for surfing. If we are on campus, students train for the ocean with fitness activities to become better surfers. We also spend time in the classroom learning about the surf break etiquette, current surf culture, the history of surfing and board design, and wave dynamics.
